I need help with an SDP related issue or question, who do I go to?
I’m so glad you asked!
New to SDP?
For people newly interested in the Self-Determination Program and wanting to learn more, I encourage them to start with their own regional center: request information and attend the SDP Orientation. If they have other questions about SDP and wish to speak to someone, the Office of the Self-Determination Program Ombudsperson is available to provide information and resources. Information on their office is available here: https://www.dds.ca.gov/initiatives/sdp/office-of-the-self-determination-ombudsperson/
Looking to Start SDP?
For people looking to begin Self-Determination, or for thoes already in the program and seeking assistance on SDP related matters, I encourage them to seek out an Independent Facilitator. The SDP Network is a site run by PPL which hosts a database of Independent Facilitators and other service providers. https://www.thecasdpnetwork.org/independent-facilitators/
Have a Specific Question or Need Advice?
For those looking for support on a specific question or task and not looking for a new facilitator, I encourage people to seek out their Local Self-Determination Advisory Committee. The committees can often answer questions, direct people to resources, and also fund SDP related supports and services such as IF-run coaching or support groups. A list of committees and links to them can be found on this page maintained by the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities: https://scdd.ca.gov/sdac/
Have a Serious Issue?
And for those who are encountering serious or systemic issues in the Self-Determination Program, the Office of the Self-Determination Program Ombudsperson has a responsibility to investigate systemic issues and provide recommendations to legislators to make improvements to the program. Once again, information for their office can be found here: https://www.dds.ca.gov/initiatives/sdp/office-of-the-self-determination-ombudsperson/
